When Marc turned pro in 1994, he spent most of his rookie season with the Wheeling Thunderbirds of the East Coast Hockey League and played 9 games with the AHL Fredericton Canadiens. The following season he made 23 appearances with Fredericton but by seasons end was released by Montreal to free agency. Lamothe signed as a free agent with Chicago in 1996, which led to three seasons in Indianapolis with their top affiliate. In 1999 Marc left Indianapolis to play in Cleveland, though he was still property of Chicago. Early in the 1999-00 campaign, Lamothe got the call from the Blackhawks who needed him to suit up as Jocelyn Thibaults back up and fill in for injured Steve Passmore. Just four minutes into the game Thibault went down with an injury and Lamothe gathered his gear on the Chicago bench and skated into the crease to make his NHL debut. Lamothe took the loss as the St. Louis Blues beat Chicago 8-3. Marc posted his first NHL victory a week later when he stopped 22 of 25 shots versus the Boston Bruins. After the season was over Lamothe and Chicago parted ways and he signed a deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets, but spent the entire year in the minors. Then after a year with that organization he was on the move again, this time signing on to join the Edmonton Oilers. Lamothe played well in camp for Edmonton, but in the end the Oilers elected to go with a rookie Finnish goaltender to back up incumbent Tommy Salo and Lamothe joined the Hamilton Bulldogs in the AHL. Lamothe signed as a free agent with Detroit on August 5, 2002 and joined their AHL affiliate, Grand Rapids Griffins. In the 2003-04 season he would play in two games with Detroit, taking a win and a tie.
